A very good question, the image that you can see on the right is an example of a 'cuneiform tablet'. It dates back to 2000 BC and on it, you can make out what at first appear to be scratchings but they are in fact an early form of hieroglyphics created by the ancient Mesopotamians. They use a fine wire to etch their wording into soft clay which they then hardened. They would create receipts for transactions or simply items of news that would be passed around their community. An early form of a text message! But, as you will read about in the next blog post here, there were other uses that were less than firendly...
